The lovely Emily and Art are newly engaged. Emily posted a two part question on her blog about weddings and money and I thought I’d take a moment to give my two cents.
- What did you spend money (I’ll expand this to include effort) on that you wish you hadn’t?
- Is there anything you skipped that you wish you hadn’t?
1. I have no regrets about where money went. Eyelash extensions were a silly extravagance, but they made me feel bridal. We didn’t need to have a cake to cut (we served cupcakes), but we ordered an eight inch cake. Hands down the best money we spent was on the Traveling Photobooth. Photos were unlimited within the time frame, we got a strip for each one that was taken for an instant guest book with photos. And even ordered a cd of originals. In terms of effort, am still very proud of all the handmade touches that made the wedding special.
2. Things we skipped. We missed people on the invite list- I wish we had invited more people. We had a lot of attrition when it came to extended family and out of town invites, and I would have filled those tables with more local friends. (Thank you to those who made the effort to come from near and far!!!) Kevin reminds me that you can’t go back and make decisions with information you didn’t have. Wedding invitations are much more stressful than I anticipated. People decline, are hurt they weren’t invited, or through one error or another don’t receive the invitation… it is really tough.
Regardless, the day was magnificent. The ceremony and reception were magical. Like most brides, I will report that it all went too fast. The outcome is what matters. So here’s to good luck, and no regrets for Art and Emily.
