When I met Kevin, he was meeting with a realtor and looking at houses regularly. In short order I convinced him to stop his search and give us some time to think about the future. The truth is I was gun shy. I had a rough experience as a homeowner from 2000 to 2007 having purchased a home that required far more resources, time and talent than I possessed. After escaping my first house, I took comfort in being a renter. If the furnace was out, I could call my landlord. Someone else could worry about real estate values, replacing siding, or a leaky roof.
I honestly never thought I’d be back in the ‘burbs buying a house, either. In the past, the thought gave me panic attacks. I want the energy and diversity of the city, but I’ve found peace in easy, reliable transit and the compromise of a shorter commute for Kevin. We still spend weekends all over the metro, and there’s a baby on the way. Plus maybe some of our new neighbors will find our Minnesota United for All Families sign inviting.
And so Jonna (you know the amazing friend I met on the opposite aisle of a Northwest flight home back in 2007) has used her powers for good and found us a home.
When the homeowners didn’t respond to our offer quickly, Jonna sent us a suggestion:
Here’s another thought.
Would you be interested / willing to put together a short letter about why you like this particular house? I think it can often help to humanize the buyers a bit and give them a “face” when the sellers are reviewing.
You guys are both good writers (I’ve read your blog), so I think it might be a nice touch.
We never used the letter, but here it is now.
We are sincerely interested in making this our home. My husband works in St. Cloud in Fine Arts Programming and I work downtown for Hennepin County. We chose Maple Grove as our home in September of 2010, halfway between our jobs, and plan to raise a family in this community.
As parents, I’m sure you can relate to our excitement about nesting as our first baby is on the way! Both of us are enamored with your home because it reminds us of the homes we grew up in (in Milwaukee and Chicago suburbs). We love the big yard and shady porch.
We look forward to working with you.
With best wishes,
